Davanagere, September  05, 2025: SS Narayana Health Superspeciality Centre has achieved a milestone by successfully performing a complex posterior sectionectomy — a liver surgery involving the removal of segments 6 and 7.

According to a press statement this is the first time such a surgery has been conducted in Davanagere, led by senior surgical gastroenterologist Dr. R.K. Hanumanth Naik.

The seven-hour operation was performed on a 72-year-old man who had been experiencing persistent abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and considerable weight loss. Ultrasound and CT scans revealed 7–8 cm hepatocellular cancerous lesions within the liver, classified as Grade B, Stage II cancer.

Posterior sectionectomy is one of the challenging liver surgeries because the affected area lies deep within the right lobe, close to major blood vessels, making it difficult to access and carefully remove. The procedure involves excising the diseased segments while preserving healthy liver tissue and maintaining liver function — a task demanding expert skill and precision.

“Our team was decided to provide the highest level of care and introducing advanced surgical treatments to Davanagere for the first time,” said Dr. R.K. Hanumanth Naik. “This surgery is highly specialized and carries risks, especially in elderly patients. We are proud to say the operation went smoothly, and the patient has now been discharged in good health.”

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Sunil Bhandarigal, Facility Director of SS Narayana Health Superspeciality Centre, said:

“We are delighted that our doctors have successfully carried out this complex liver surgery for the first time in Davanagere. This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence, innovation, and patient-focused care. I congratulate the surgical team and assure the people of central Karnataka that we are dedicated to bringing world-class healthcare closer to home.”
