Udupi, Aug 6, 2025: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. has appealed to the public to celebrate the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival in an eco-friendly, harmonious, and devotional manner. He emphasized the importance of avoiding harmful materials and protecting water bodies during idol immersion.

Chairing a preparatory meeting on law and order arrangements for the festival, held today at the Rajathadri DC office in Manipal, Swaroopa T.K. stressed the need to promote the use of clay Ganesh idols instead of those made from Plaster of Paris (PoP).

“Installing eco-friendly clay idols can prevent serious environmental damage. When PoP idols coated with chemical paints are immersed in water bodies, they release toxic substances that pollute lakes, wells, and streams, posing a severe threat to aquatic life and humans,” she said.

To curb the inflow and use of PoP idols, the DC directed officials to establish checkposts at district borders and enforce strict action against the transport and sale of such idols. She also encouraged local artisans and vendors to produce and sell clay idols, offering support for their promotion.

At the taluk level, officials must inspect manufacturing units and sales outlets of Ganesh idols and conduct surprise visits to ensure compliance with regulations.

Further, she instructed local urban and rural bodies to designate specific immersion spots in ponds and riverbanks. Adequate facilities should also be arranged for the collection and disposal of puja waste, such as flowers and offerings, to maintain cleanliness and environmental safety.

Strict Guidelines for Public Celebrations

Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, speaking at the meeting, outlined security and noise regulations for public installations of Ganesh idols:

  • Idol committees must obtain prior permission from both the police and local authorities before setting up public pandals.
  • Use of loudspeakers will be restricted from 10 PM to 6 AM.
  • Organizers should install CCTV cameras and ensure proper lighting at the venues.
  • No provocative slogans or messages will be allowed on banners.
  • All banners must be approved by the relevant authorities before installation.

Officials Present

Additional Deputy Commissioner Abeer Gadyal, ASP Sudhakar Nayak, Assistant Commissioner Rashmi, tahsildars, and several other district-level officials attended the meeting.
