‘Hejje Pooje’ Ceremony at Srinivas University Unveils New Courses in Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana


Mangaluru, Jan 19, 2025: Srinivas University celebrated the inauguration of its certificate courses in Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana with a vibrant ‘Hejje Pooje’ ceremony at the Srinivas Auditorium, Hampankatta. The event, held on 17th January, was a heartfelt tribute to India’s rich cultural heritage.
Dr. CA. A Raghavendra Rao, Hon. Chancellor of Srinivas University, inaugurated the program. Sharing his personal admiration for these art forms, he highlighted their timeless appeal and cultural significance. “Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana are more than art—they’re bridges between generations and a treasure for humanity,” he said, emphasizing the role of institutions in preserving traditional arts.
The term Hejje Pooje, a sacred ritual performed by dancers to honor the divine, the art, and their teachers, was a fitting start to the students’ artistic journey. Dr. Rao, whose vision inspired the initiative, underscored the importance of blending cultural foundations with academic excellence.
Dr. A. Srinivas Rao, Hon. Pro Chancellor, spoke about Bharatanatyam’s universal appeal, describing it as a powerful medium of storytelling and emotion. Chief Guest Dr. Mishra, an alumna of Srinivas University, highlighted the transformative role of art and literature in shaping lives and fostering cultural understanding.
Yakshagana Guru Shri Ravi Alevooraya Vorkady, a revered artist and Basavaratna National Award recipient, delivered an inspiring address, calling Yakshagana a “global phenomenon” and urging the younger generation to embrace its beauty. Bharatanatyam Guru Vidushi Smt. Prathibha Kumar spoke about the discipline and dedication required to master classical dance, applauding the university’s efforts to promote traditional arts.
Students of the newly introduced courses, under the guidance of their gurus, performed their first steps in Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana, marking the beginning of an enriching journey. A sacred pooja was also conducted to invoke blessings for the initiative.
Dr. K. Sathyanarayana Reddy, Vice Chancellor, emphasized the blend of science and art in preserving traditional forms. Dr. Pavithra Kumari, Dean of the Institute of Aviation Studies, expressed her joy at the successful launch of the courses and highlighted the enduring beauty of Indian cultural arts.
The ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Dr. Anil Kumar, Registrar, and other esteemed deans and faculty members from Srinivas University. A warm welcome was delivered by Dr. Anil Kumar, while Ms. Prithvi, Assistant Professor, delivered the vote of thanks.
With these certificate courses, Srinivas University takes a significant step toward nurturing India’s cultural heritage, fostering creativity, and inspiring future generations to cherish traditional art forms.
