Mangaluru, Dec 31: Lok Sabha Member Captain Brijesh Chowta has emphasized the need to raise public awareness about the subsidies provided by the Central Government for installing rooftop solar systems under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Yojana.

Addressing a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday, Chowta chaired discussions on the preparations for the upcoming workshop aimed at promoting the scheme. He highlighted the financial and environmental benefits of adopting rooftop solar systems and encouraged active participation from the public.

Subsidy Details Under Surya Ghar Yojana

Explaining the specifics of the scheme, Chowta informed that subsidies are available for households installing solar systems, making renewable energy more accessible and affordable. The subsidy structure includes:

  • ₹30,000 for 1 kW solar systems,
  • ₹60,000 for 2 kW solar systems, and
  • Up to ₹78,000 for solar systems above 3 kW capacity.

These subsidies aim to reduce the financial burden on households, encouraging them to shift to sustainable energy solutions.

Dual Benefits of Solar Energy

Highlighting the scheme’s practical advantages, Chowta stated that households can use the electricity generated from their solar systems for their own consumption. Additionally, surplus electricity can be sold back to the grid through MESCOM (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited), providing a source of extra income for consumers.

“This initiative not only promotes renewable energy but also empowers citizens to contribute to the energy grid while reducing their electricity expenses,” Chowta remarked during the meeting.

Call for Increased Awareness

Captain Chowta stressed the importance of creating widespread awareness about the Surya Ghar Yojana, ensuring that more people understand its benefits and take advantage of the government subsidies. He urged officials to intensify outreach efforts through workshops and public campaigns, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where awareness about renewable energy solutions remains limited.

The meeting also included discussions on the logistical aspects of organizing the workshop, with officials from the district administration and representatives from MESCOM pledging their support to make the initiative a success.

A Step Towards Renewable Energy

The Surya Ghar Yojana aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy and reducing the nation’s carbon footprint. By encouraging households to adopt solar energy, the scheme aims to create a more sustainable and energy-efficient future while providing economic benefits to the public.

With the subsidies and the potential for earning through surplus energy, the initiative is expected to drive significant interest in solar adoption across Dakshina Kannada and beyond.

Union Minister for Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi will visit Mangaluru on January 2 to inaugurate the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Yojana Workshop. During his visit, the minister will review the progress of the scheme’s implementation and interact with beneficiaries who have already installed solar systems under the initiative, informed MP Captain Brijesh Chowta.

Preparations Underway for the Minister’s Visit

MP Brijesh Chowta instructed the district administration to ensure all necessary arrangements for the minister’s visit and the workshop’s successful conduct.

Speaking at the preparatory meeting, MESCOM Managing Director Jayakumar revealed that 675 individuals in Dakshina Kannada district have already installed solar systems under the scheme. Additionally, 270 dealers have been identified for the sale of solar equipment under the Surya Ghar Yojana.

Jayakumar further informed that an online portal has been launched for citizens to register their applications. The portal can be accessed at msuditchigov.in for solar system installations and subsidy applications.

Financial Support for Solar Equipment Purchases

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M.P. assured that discussions with banks are underway to facilitate loans for citizens to purchase solar equipment, making the scheme more accessible to the general public.

Awareness Programs Planned

MLAs Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty and Vedavyas Kamath emphasized the importance of conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public about the benefits of the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Yojana. They urged officials to actively engage with communities to maximize participation in the scheme.
