Udupi, December 14, 2024: Deputy Commissioner Dr. K Vidya Kumari has praised the installation of solar power units in all Primary Health Centers (PHCs) across Udupi district by Manipal Technologies and SELCO Foundation as a remarkable and commendable initiative.

Speaking at the “Surya Namaskara – Felicitation Ceremony” held at the Shri Krishna Hall of the District Health and Family Welfare Department in Ajjarkad on Friday, Dr. Vidya Kumari commended the efforts of the organizations in implementing solar energy projects at no cost to the PHCs. She presided over the event, organized in collaboration with the district administration and the health department.

“All 60 PHCs in the district now have solar power units, thanks to the commendable work of Manipal Technologies and SELCO Foundation. These units address power interruptions often faced during emergencies and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply essential for patient care and vaccine storage. The responsible and meaningful use of CSR funds by these organizations sets an example,” the DC said.

She further emphasized the growing importance of solar energy in schools, anganwadis, and even individual households, citing the Union Government’s Har Ghar Surya Yojana, which promotes solar energy installations with subsidies and loans.

Reducing Carbon Emissions in Udupi
Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Boyal lauded the initiative as a step toward reducing carbon emissions and advancing the district’s commitment to green energy. He noted, “This project aligns with India’s ambitious Zero Carbon and Green Energy vision by utilizing abundant solar energy as an alternative to conventional power sources.”

Highlighting the progress, he added that Udupi district is now a leader in the state in implementing solar energy across health centers, setting a benchmark in development and sustainability.

A Unique Model Without Government Grants
Dr. Prashant G. Bhat, District Malaria Control Officer, noted that Udupi is the first district in the state to install solar units in all its PHCs without government grants, relying solely on donor contributions. “This is a proud achievement for the district and a vital step in combating global warming caused by carbon emissions. Solar energy is an inexhaustible resource and a key solution to future energy challenges,” he said.

Voices from Beneficiaries
Doctors from PHCs in Pernankila, Karje, and Kumbashi shared their experiences, highlighting the benefits of uninterrupted electricity and the operational ease provided by the solar units.

Additional Support for the Community
At the event, two hearing-impaired beneficiaries received hearing aids from Manipal Technologies as part of their community outreach.
