ICS Professional Qualifying Exams 2024 Held in Mangaluru: Capt. Sami Modak Wins Prestigious Award

Mangaluru, Sept 02, 2024: The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), London, conducted its Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE) for 2024 at the Mangaluru Centre from May 13th to 23rd. Seven candidates, including six men and one woman, appeared for 16 papers at the center. Four candidates, Capt. Sami Modak, Capt. Jewel Fernandes, Capt. Lijoy, and Mr. Shrinath, passed the exams and qualified for membership in the ICS.
Capt. Sami Modak, Senior Pilot of the New Mangalore Port Authority, secured the prestigious Port of London Authority award for achieving the highest marks globally in the ‘Port and Terminal Management’ paper. Capt. Modak, who holds a Certificate of Competency as Master Foreign Going from the Director General of Shipping, Government of India, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Transportation and Logistics from Tolani Maritime Institute, Mumbai University, was honored for his accomplishment.
This year, four of the 19 international prize winners were from examination centers under the ICS East India Branch. Mangaluru, along with Kolkata and New Delhi, produced one prize winner each. Athens, Greece, and Singapore were among the other centers that saw multiple international prize winners.
Since becoming an examination center in 2010, Mangaluru has seen 30 candidates successfully pass the ICS exams and earn membership in the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS). Many of these candidates have secured prominent positions in the shipping and maritime sectors in India and abroad, including the Gulf Countries, Singapore, Hong Kong, Cyprus, and Australia.
The ICS PQE is a recognized educational benchmark in the global shipping and maritime industry, offering candidates a comprehensive education in shipping business, legal principles, sea transport economics, and international trade. Examination papers are set and evaluated in London, and the curriculum is continuously updated to reflect industry advancements.
Mangaluru is one of 105 ICS PQE examination centers worldwide and the fifth in India.
