National Anti-Ragging Week Observed at Srinivas University Institute of Engineering & Technology
Mangaluru, Aug 22, 2024: As part of the National Anti-Ragging Week initiative led by the UGC, Srinivas University Institute of Engineering & Technology (SUIET), Mukka, organized a comprehensive awareness program titled “Unite Against Ragging (Anti-Ragging Awareness Mahautsav).”
The event, aimed at curbing ragging activities, was held in collaboration with Mangaluru City Police.
The program was inaugurated by Chief Guest and Resource Person, Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad of Surathkal Police Station, along with Guest of Honour, Police Sub-Inspector Raghu Nayak. The inaugural ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp, overseen by Dr. Ramakrishna N. Hegde, Dean of SUIET Mukka, who presided over the event. Also present were Dr. B.M. Praveen Kumar, Director of Research at Srinivas University, and Prof. Thrivikrama Prabhu, NSS Coordinator.
Inspector Mahesh Prasad delivered an insightful talk on “Anti-Ragging Abhiyan and Drugs Free Campus.” He emphasized the reasons behind ragging, dispelled common misconceptions, and addressed the emotional and psychological aspects of such behavior. He further highlighted the legal framework prohibiting ragging, measures colleges can adopt to prevent it, and the importance of maintaining a drug-free campus. His presentation included significant historical references, including the first recorded ragging case in 1873 and the landmark Vishwa Jagriti Mission case, which led to the formation of the Raghavan Committee by the Supreme Court of India in 2006.
During his address, Inspector Prasad stressed the crucial role students play in nation-building and encouraged them to foster an environment of mutual respect and opportunity for all, particularly junior students. Following his talk, students and faculty engaged in an interactive session, discussing emergency helplines and other preventive measures.
In his presidential remarks, Dr. Ramakrishna N. Hegde underscored the importance of anti-ragging awareness in higher education institutions, emphasizing that such initiatives help shape students into responsible citizens. He also discussed the legal measures in place at the university to combat ragging-related issues.
The program’s convenor, Prof. Shrinath Rao, introduced the chief guest and steered the event as master of ceremonies. The event also featured competitions such as poster-making and reel-making, aimed at further raising awareness among students about anti-ragging. Winners of these competitions were honored with certificates of excellence by Inspector Prasad and PSI Raghu Nayak.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Thrivikrama Prabhu, while Dr. B.M. Praveen Kumar gave the welcome address. HODs, members of the College Anti-Ragging Committee, NSS Committee, faculty members, staff, and students were present to mark the occasion.
