The Monsoon School is a six-day program with no registration fee

Manipal/ Bengaluru, May 28, 2024: The first edition of Monsoon School, a six-day design hack lab, will be held from June 24-29, 2024, in Manipal, Karnataka. This program aims to tackle challenges related to the environment, climate change, and nature-culture relations through innovative design approaches.

Organized by Dr. Deepta Sateesh, who holds the Dr. TMA Pai Endowment Chair in “Adaptive Ecologies and Climate Extremes – Decolonising the Anthropocene,” the Monsoon School is a collaborative effort with the Manipal School of Architecture and Planning, Centre for DWEEPA, and Centre for SADBHAVA at MAHE, Manipal.

The design lab will focus on the Southwestern Ghats and Coastal Karnataka, a region known for its ecological sensitivity and unique natural features. This area, impacted by the Southwest Monsoon, is currently experiencing rapid urbanization and development challenges, making it an ideal subject for the program.

The Monsoon School invites a diverse group of participants, including ecologists, architects, urban designers, planners, tech enthusiasts, journalists, conservationists, artists, and researchers, as well as students with a strong interest in visualization, mapping, storytelling, and environmental research.

Themes to be covered include development and conservation, community livelihoods, climate adaptation, and traditional knowledge and cultural practices. Selection is based on the diversity of backgrounds, expertise, and motivation rather than age or experience.

Registration for the Monsoon School closes on June 3, 2024. Participation is limited and requires a six-day commitment. There are no registration fees.
