Mangaluru, Oct 15, 2023: In a bid to curb the usage of cigarettes and tobacco, In-charge Deputy Commissioner Dr. Anandh K emphasized the necessity of prominently displaying warning boards near educational institutions. He also stressed the importance of imposing mandatory penalties for smoking in and using tobacco products in public places.

Dr. Anand made these remarks while presiding over a meeting of the National Tobacco Control District Level Coordination Committee, held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Mangaluru.

He further advocated for the installation of ‘tobacco-free area’ boards in educational institutions, temples, and hospital premises. Dr. Anand highlighted the ongoing efforts to raise awareness among villagers about the grave health risks associated with cigarette and tobacco consumption, particularly cancer and various related diseases.

The tobacco control program is an integral component of the cleanliness initiative spearheaded by the City Corporation. Officials from district and taluk levels are actively involved in executing the project. NGOs are providing counseling to those grappling with addiction. Officials reported that 173 individuals who were previously addicted have successfully transitioned to a cigarette and tobacco-free life.

District Health and Family Welfare Health Officer Dr Thimmaiah, District Programme Officer Naveen Chandra Kulal and other officials were present.
