Cultural Fusion Shaped Tulunadu: Dr Pundikai Ganapayya Bhat
Ujire, September 27, 2023: Dr. Pundikai Ganapayya Bhat, retired professor of ancient history and archeology, Dhavala College, emphasized that Tulunadu emerged from a harmonious blend of Vedic and folk cultures.
Addressing a special lecture on ‘Temple Culture of Tulunadu’ organized by the Department of History as part of the ‘Save Historical Heritage’ initiative at SDM college, Ujire today, Dr. Bhat underscored Tulunadu’s unique identity as a land deeply intertwined with both divine and earthly realms. He highlighted that while ‘Bhootaradhane‘ stems from folk traditions, deity veneration reflects Vedic influences, exemplifying the rich cultural and religious tapestry that defines the region.
“Tradition often resides in the intangible. The Tulu language, for instance, is distinct from the geographical entity of Tulu nadu. Tulu nadu is the cradle of Tulu culture, boasting over 4,000 temples. What’s fascinating is that these sacred sites weren’t commissioned by monarchs, but rather erected by individuals driven by cultural and spiritual devotion,” Dr. Bhat emphasized.
The principal of the college, Dr. B.A. Kumar Hegde, presided over the session, while Abhijna Upadhyaya, Associate Professor from the Department of History, and Devadas, the student representative, were present.
Head of the Department of History, Sanmathi Kumar welcomed the gathering. Maria delivered and vote of thanks and Tejaswini compered the program.
