Udupi: DC Advocates Environment-Friendly Ganesha Idols
Udupi, September 15, 2023: In a proactive move towards sustainable practices, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vidya Kumari K paid a visit to a Ganesha idol making and marketing unit in Kadiyali during the evening hours today.
During the interaction with the skilled artisans crafting Ganapati idols, emphasis was placed on the choice of materials and color coatings used in the process. Dr. Vidya Kumar emphasized the importance of crafting colorless idols, with an aim to minimize environmental impact.
Highlighting the adverse effects of immersing plaster of Paris and colored idols in water bodies, Dr. Vidya Kumari shed light on the potential hazards posed by lead, chromium, and other harmful chemicals to the natural water sources. These elements not only disrupt the ecosystem but also pose a threat to the lives of various forms of wildlife. Public health is also at risk. Dr. Vidya Kumar directed environment pollution officials to take immediate legal action against those found violating these guidelines.
The DC stressed the need for a responsible approach, advocating the immersion of only clay and non-colored idols near water bodies. It was further emphasized that solid waste should not be allowed to be immersed along with the idol.
Urban local bodies and gram panchayats were urged to make separate arrangements for the immersion of Ganesha idols, ensuring a more controlled and sustainable process.
She urged the public to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in a manner that is both peaceful and harmonious, while also being eco-friendly. This conscientious approach is essential for preserving environment and safeguarding the well-being of all living beings.
Regional Environment Officer KM Raju and District Information Officer Manjunath B. Raju accompanied the DC.
