Childhood cancer awareness month: Kasturba Medical College and Hospital holds candle light walk
Manipal, September 14, 2023: Childhood cancer, when identified early and treated by a specialized team, often lead to successful outcomes. In observance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September, the division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Kasturba Medical College and Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, collaborated with the AccessLife Assistance Foundation to organize an enlightening awareness walk on September 12.
Dr. Vasudeva Bhat K, Associate Professor and Head of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Division, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need for early detection. He noted that India witnesses approximately 78,000 childhood cancer diagnoses annually. Sadly, lower cure rates persist due to delayed diagnosis, the stigma associated with cancer, and related infections.
Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, inaugurated the walk by lighting the KMC Fountain in gold, a symbolic gesture representing the precious nature of children in our lives. He expressed, “Gold, being a symbol of a precious metal, perfectly mirrors the most cherished aspect of our lives – our children.”
The walk commenced from the Fountain of Kasturba Medical College and culminated at AccessLife MAHE, Manipal center. The event garnered a significant turnout, with healthcare professionals, student representatives, and volunteers walking alongside children battling cancer and their dedicated caregivers, demonstrating unified support for the cause.
Prior to the walk, an array of games and enjoyable activities were organized for children currently undergoing cancer treatment.
