Mangaluru, August 17, 2023: In a captivating celestial spectacle, on Aug 18, we find ourselves at the crossroads of a rare occurrence known as the “Day of Zero Shadow”. As the morning sun graces us with its golden rays, it brings forth an intriguing phenomenon – the prolonged shadow that usually accompanies the sun’s presence seems to vanish into thin air.

This mesmerizing event is set to unfold at 12:35 pm, when the shadow makes its discreet exit casting a spell of wonderment upon the surroundings.

What makes this day truly exceptional is that this enchanting play of light and shadow happens not once, but twice a year. In Mangaluru, the magic unfolds on August 18 and April 24. During these moments, the latitude aligns itself at 23.5 degrees north and south of the equator, creating a canvas where shadows virtually disappear, taking us into a world where light reigns supreme.

This captivating phenomenon finds its roots in the cosmic ballet between the Earth and the sun. During the Uttarayan phase, which spans from December 21 to June 21, the sun embarks on a journey towards the tropic of Cancer. Conversely, during the Dakshinayan period, spanning from June 21 to December 21, the sun’s trajectory leads it towards the tropic of Capricorn. It’s during these celestial transitions that a momentary magic unfolds, as the sun stands directly overhead, causing objects on Earth’s surface to cast virtually no shadow.

For those eager to unravel the secrets of this celestial ballet, the Pilikula Regional Science Centre has thoughtfully curated a series of engaging demonstrations within their premises. Enthusiasts and curious minds alike are invited to partake in this immersive experience, gaining insights into the science and spectacle of the “Day of Zero Shadow”. Experts will be on hand to provide illuminating explanations and facilitate on-site observations, making this phenomenon both accessible and educational.

Moreover, this natural wonder isn’t just a delight for science enthusiasts; it extends its charm to educators and students as well. Schools nestled in convenient proximity can seize this unique opportunity to witness and explore this fascinating occurrence firsthand. As the Director of Pilikula Regional Science Centre aptly points out, the absence of shadows during this phenomenon offers an ideal learning environment for young minds to delve into the realm of light, shadows, and the captivating dance of celestial bodies.
