With these latest additions, the airport now boasts a total of six aerobridges, empowering airlines with essential operational flexibility, especially during the monsoon season when transitioning passengers between the plane on the apron and the terminal becomes challenging.
The new aerobridges are seamlessly integrated into the airport’s modern terminal building, and they play a crucial role in optimizing the utilization of the 11 parking stands available on the apron. Out of these stands, six are now connected to the terminal through aerobridges, while the remaining stands are open bays. This thoughtful initiative was carried out in close consultation with stakeholders, including airlines and the airport security group CISF, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for passengers.
“The airport is always committed to giving the best possible experience to the passengers in terms of infrastructure,” the airport spokesperson said. The move to put in use these aerobridges used both for domestic and international flight movements, will ensure that the passengers are not exposed to the vagaries of nature while boarding or alighting from a plane and strives to enrich the overall travel experience while using the airport, the spokesperson noted.
The newly introduced aerobridges are designed to accommodate narrow-bodied planes like the Airbus A320, A321, and Boeing 737-800, which are commonly used by airlines operating to this coastal city in Karnataka. For routes utilizing an ATR aircraft, passengers will continue to be ferried to and from the terminal in coaches. It’s worth noting that the airport has been employing aerobridges since 2010 and has steadily increased their numbers over the years, culminating in the current total of six.
