Manipal: MIT Celebrates Women in Mathematics Day-2023
Manipal, May 15, 2023: The Manipal Institute of Technology in Manipal commemorated the “Women in Mathematics Day” on May 12, 2023, with partial sponsorship from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). This annual event, observed globally on May 12th, pays tribute to the renowned female mathematician and Fields medalist, Professor Maryam Mirzakhani. Celebrations took place across 47 countries, and the event at Manipal Institute of Technology revolved around the themes of G20, W20, and the Institute’s Innovation Council (IIC).
The inauguration of the event was conducted by Prof. Uttara V Naik Nimbalkar, a retired professor from Savitribai Phule Pune University, and presided over by Cdr. Dr. Anil Rana, the Director of MIT. Dr. Geetha M, the Director of Student Affairs at MAHE, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.
The Department of Mathematics organized several activities to mark this special day, including poster presentations, mathematical rangoli, and quiz competitions. Over 140 students from neighboring colleges attended the event and participated in these engaging activities, showcasing their insightful thoughts through posters and mathematical rangolis.
Shyamala S Kunder, the former member of the National Commission for Women was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function.
Dr. Somashekara Bhat, the Joint Director of MIT, presided over the function, and Dr. Vinod V Thomas, the Registrar Evaluation at MAHE, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Nirmala Kumari, from Bosco PU College, was felicitated during the function for her instrumental role in encouraging slow learners to pursue Mathematics. The esteemed dignitaries reiterated the importance of women’s participation in STEM education and encouraged its growth.
