St Agnes College Organizes Guest Lecture on Waste Management in India
Mangaluru, May 05, 2023: St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, hosted a guest lecture on “Waste Management in India: Emerging and Eco-Friendly Technologies” on May 4, 2023.
The Departments of Political Science and Hindi organized the lecture under the guidance of Dr. Shailaja H.G. and Gayathri B.K., heads of the respective departments. The resource speaker for the lecture was Ms Vibha, a research scholar from the Department of Biotechnology Engineering at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte.
The primary objective of the lecture was to create awareness among students about the various sources of waste and their management technologies.
Vibha provided a comprehensive understanding of the different types and sources of solid waste generated in the country, along with the adverse effects of poor management of solid waste. She highlighted the impact of solid waste on environmental components such as air, soil, and water, and discussed waste management practices in India and other countries.
She introduced the latest technology for sustainable waste management and resource conservation. She covered topics such as agricultural waste management in India, the generation of biofuel from agricultural residue, strategies for low carbon-emitting fuel to tackle global warming, and the production of biodiesel and bioethanol from biomass.
She spoke about the Biofuel Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) in Nitte, the only biofuel research centre in Dakshina Kannada, which produces biodiesel from used cooking oil.
The lecture was attended by nearly 156 students from various streams and faculty members. It provided valuable insights into waste management practices and their impact on the environment, promoting eco-friendly technologies to build a sustainable future.
