Udupi, April 06, 2023: In the backdrop of the upcoming elections, Udupi District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao M has warned against illegal liquor sales.

He also ensured that all preparations are being made for smooth and transparent elections.

Speaking at a meeting with the District Wine Merchant Association and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kurma Rao emphasized that the Model Code of Conduct is already in force and strict action will be taken against licensees who violate the rules by selling liquor illegally.

He stressed that all liquor vendors must maintain records of their stocks and sales details every day and provide specific information to the excise department. Any discrepancy found in their records or illegal sale of liquor in areas other than the designated place will result in strict action being taken against the licensees.

Additionally, industrialists in the district were instructed to ensure that their godowns are not given to others for any other purpose and that no illegal stocks are stored in the godowns.

The meeting was attended by District Superintendent of Police Hakay Akshay Machhindra, Additional Deputy Commissioner Veena B.N., Zilla Panchayat Chief Accounts Officer Prasanna Bhakta, and officials from the election expenditure monitoring committee.

Dr. Ashok Kamath, Master Trainer, provided information about the criteria prescribed by the Election Commission. District Excise Department Officer Roopa and Industries Department Joint Director Nagaraj Nayak were also present at the meeting.

Koormarao urged the office bearers of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry to keep necessary documents about their day-to-day wholesale transactions properly and provide them for scrutiny if required.

The district is taking all necessary measures to ensure that the elections are conducted smoothly and transparently, and that no illegal activities are carried out during the election period.
