- Runway at CSMIA to shut down temporarily for pre-monsoon maintenance on May 2 between 11 am and 5 pm
- Airlines and stakeholders informed 6 months ahead to avoid flight schedule disruptions
- CSMIA committed to maintaining highest air travel safety and security standards
Mumbai, April 04, 2023: Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced its annual pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work as part of its contingency plan to ensure operational continuity and passenger safety. On May 2, 2023, both runways, RWY 09/27 and 14/32, will be temporarily non-operational from 1100hrs to 1700hrs.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued in this regard. All operations will resume as usual from 1700hrs on the same day. This yearly practice is essential to ensure operational continuity and maintain safety standards for passengers.
With nearly 900 daily flight movements, CSMIA is one of the world’s busiest single runway airports, covering almost 1033 acres. Therefore, timely repair work is crucial to maintain its health and operational continuity. The maintenance work involves specialists in engineering and airside teams inspecting the runway surface for wear and tear, which may have occurred due to day-to-day operations.
CSMIA has planned the runway maintenance work meticulously in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including airlines and aviation authorities. To ensure zero inconvenience to passengers, the airport has informed all relevant stakeholders six months in advance. Airlines have been able to plan their flight schedules accordingly.
During the four critical months of monsoon, Mumbai airport handles close to 92,000 ATMs, which fly approximately 10 million passengers to India’s financial capital. Therefore, the maintenance work is part of the airport’s monsoon contingency plan, devised to respond to any possible issues arising due to inclement weather, ensuring business continuity, and providing assurance to all airlines and passengers that the airport functions round the clock.
