Manipal: Kasturba Hospital hosts special kidney health program for patients and public

Manipal, March 09, 2023: Kasturba Hospital Manipal marked World Kidney Day with an informative and engaging program aimed at raising awareness about kidney health among patients and the general public.
The program, held today, featured several eminent medical experts, including Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean-KMC Manipal, and Dr. G. Arun Maiya, Dean-Manipal College of Health Professions, who spoke about the common causes of kidney disease.
Dr. Maiya highlighted that diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity potentially causing significant damage to the kidneys and leading to kidney failure. He further explained that urinary tract infections could also cause long-term kidney problems.
The hospital, in its efforts to promote kidney health, introduced special kidney health check packages to encourage people to undergo a kidney check-up at least once a year. These check-up packages were launched during the program by Dr. Hegde.
The program was attended by Chief Operating Officer of Teaching Hospitals, MAHE Manipal, Dr. Anand Venugopal, and Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Shetty.
Dr. Shankar Prasad N, Professor, and Head Department of Nephrology provided an overview of the significance of World Kidney Day, which is observed worldwide on the second Thursday of March every year.
The objective of this day is to educate and create awareness among the public about kidney health. Each year, the day is observed with a different theme, and this year’s theme was “Preparing for the Unexpected and Supporting the Vulnerable.”
Dr. Ravindra Prabhu A, Professor of Nephrology, welcomed the gathering, and Dr. Darshan Rangaswamy, Pediatric Nephrologist, proposed a vote of thanks. The master of ceremonies for the program was Dr. Srinivas Shenoy.
