Mangaluru: IMA urges people to get their children vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis
Mangaluru, Dec 13, 2022: The Indian Medical Association Mangaluru has urged people to get their children vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis.
“The Japanese encephalitis vaccine available in our country is very safe and provides protection with a single dose. Indian Medical Association Mangaluru urges all the parents of school-going students to give consent and get their children vaccinated at the earliest,” IMA Mangaluru present Dr. Venugopala and Secretary Dr. Archith Boloor stated in a press release.
“Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne viral disease, the incidence of which has been rising in more than 10 districts of our state. Once the infection develops, it presents with sudden onset of fever and nervous system-related illness in the form of altered behavior, unconsciousness, paralysis, and fits,” the press statement said.
“Usually children below the age of 15 years are most affected. The disease has a very high death. One out of three affected children dies from this disease. Of the children who survive, half of them, have permanent brain damage in the form of mental retardation, seizure (fits), and paralysis,” it added.
