Karwar: Activists want flyover near DC’s office to be named after Major Rama Raghoba Rane
Karwar, Dec 05, 2022: Activists led by Jana Shakti Vedike president Madhav Nayak have requested the government to name the flyover near DC’s office after Major Rama Raghoba Rane.
Rane, who was born on June 26, 1918, in Chendia village of Uttara Kannada district had served in the British Indian Army during the second world war. After independence, he was commissioned in the Bombay Sappers Regiment of the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers. He played a key role in the Indo-Pak war of 1947 and was awarded Param Vir Chakra on April 8, 1948. Rane retired in 1968.
“The only person to be awarded the Para Vir Chakra from Karnataka died on July 10, 1994. His statue has been installed near INS Chapal Warship in Karwar. He should be remembered every day. He should be a role model for the future generation. As a step towards this, the flyover near DC’s office should be named after him,” Madhav Nayak stated in a memorandum.
“Though he was born in Karwar, he was in Pune on duty. Circle and Road have been named at Pune after him. Recently the Central government has named an island at Andaman and Nicobar after him. The government should immediately fulfill our demand,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nayak has lauded the district administration for installing the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar near DC’s office.
Madhav Nayak along with, Rama Naik, Babu Shaikh, Suresh Naik, Kashinath Naik, Suraj Kroomkar, CN Naik, Altaf Shaikh, Dr Vasanth Bandekar and DK Naik submitted a memorandum through Additional DC Raju Mogaveera.
