Udupi, Aug 22, 2021: Sri Hayagreeva Jayanthi was celebrated at Sode Matha at Sonda in Uttara Kannada district on Sunday.

Hayagreeva Jayanthi is celebrated on Paurnami (full moon day) of Shravana Masa. Hayagreeva, the Horse-faced avatar of Lord Vishnu is worshipped as the God of knowledge and wisdom. He is one of the presiding deities of Sode Matha.

There is an interesting incident about how the worship began at the Matha.

Sri Vadiraja Tirtharu of Sode Matha, who lived in the 16th century was a great devotee of Sri Hayagreeva.

When a goldsmith tended to cast the metal into a mould to make the icon of Vighnesha, it turned into an icon of Hayagriva. He tried again and again but failed. The Lord appeared in the dream of Sri Vadirajaru and asked him to take the icon for daily worship. The Lord also instructed the goldsmith in the dream to offer that icon to Sri Vadirajaru. On the next day, Sri Vadirajaru came to the goldsmith and saw the dazzling Hayagreeva icon. He took the icon and kept on the Peetha with Bhuvaraha and worshipped with great devotion.
