Cyclone Tauktae: Life and infrastructure hit along Coastal Karnataka
Mangaluru, May 17, 2021: Heavy rain and rough sea has caused damage to the life and infrastructures in the Canara Coast.
People in low-lying areas and seashores were shifted to temporary rehabilitation camps on Sunday. Roads, especially those, on the seashore have been damaged. Strong wind resulted in tree felling in several parts damaging electric lines and poles.
Details as of Sunday evening:
Dakshina Kannada: As many as 28 villages in Mangaluru Taluk were affected. 380 people were shifted to safer places. About 122 houses were damaged (14 completely and 108 partially). Two cattle died and 6.25 hectares of horticulture crops were affected.
The road near Surathkal, on the seashore, was severely damaged due to the massive waves. In some places, the road was completely washed away.
Udupi:18 boats were damaged partially and 12 fishing nets were destroyed. The rains also resulted in the death of five cattle. About 83 houses were damaged (7 fully and 76 were partial). Roads were also spoilt in many places. The loss is estimated to be ₹ 68.88 crores.
The district has also recorded 5,271 mtrs sea erosion. As many as 105 power supply poles, 8 transformers were hit.
Uttara Kannada: According to the district administration, 31 villages were affected (11 in Bhatkal, 7 each in Honnavar and Ankola, and three each in Karwar and Kumta) and a person died in Bhatkal.
As many as 98 houses were damaged (92 partially, 5 severely, and 1 completely). The district administration has opened 4 temporary rehabilitation centers. About 70 people (40 in Kumta and 30 in Honnavar) were shifted to these centers.
The rain has damaged 2.87 hectares of horticulture crops. About 27 fishing nets and 15 boats were spoilt.
Electricity lines have been severely hit by the rains. According to the district administration 386 poles and 18 transformers were damaged (150 poles in Honnavar, 112 in Kumta, 76 poles and 14 transformers in Karwar, 23 poles and 4 transformers in Bhatkal, 25 poles in Joida.
