Manipal, March 30, 2021: State Health and Family Welfare Minister Sudhakar K opined that the thickly populated campus and failure to follow COVID appropriate behavior by the students caused the spike in cases in MIT campus in Manipal.

During his day-long visit to the Udupi district, Sudhakar visited the MIT campus, held a review meeting, and also visited the government hospital in Udupi.

Sudhakar said that the DC has already declared the campus as a containment zone and about 9,000 RT-PCR tests have been conducted there till now and added that most of the students were asymptomatic and some with mild symptoms.

The minister said that steps have been taken to send the students who have tested negative and who have completed their exams back to their native places.

Speaking about the situation in the state, Sudhakar expressed relief about the low level of mortality rate.

He said that the health department aimed to check the mortality rate even if there is an increase in the number of cases.
