 Unseasonal rain continues to soak Coastal Karnataka

Udupi/ Mangaluru Jan 07, 2021: Rain and thunderstorm on Wednesday damaged a hotel and three houses in Udupi district.

According to officials, the incident took place at Hotel Sampath near Brahmavar around 8 pm. It is said that the lightning first struck the refrigerator’s coolant and resulted in a short circuit. Later the fire spread to other parts. The cash box was also been gutted in the fire and the loss is estimated to be around 1 lakh.

Meanwhile, a house belonging to Geetha at Uppunda in Byndoor was hit by lightning causing damage of about ₹ 50 thousand. The house of Aitu Poojary in Munkoor, Karkala Taluk too was damaged due to lightning. The estimated loss is about ₹ 80 thousand.

The shed belonging to Luci of the same village was damaged causing damage of ₹ 1 lakh.

Udupi district recorded 37.6 mm rain. While Udupi taluk recorded 57 mm, Karkala and Kundapur recorded 48.9 mm and 17.9 mm respectively.

While in the last two days few places experienced rain, on Wednesday the unseasonal rain soaked most parts in Dakshina Kannada districts.

Sullia and nearby areas experienced for some time in the afternoon. Belthangady, Bantwal, Mangaluru, and Udupi region received a late evening shower. The rain which started around 6 pm continued till night. It was accompanied by thunder and lightning.

In some places, it continued to drizzle till the morning however no major damage was reported in DK district. Power supply was disrupted in a few rural areas.

Bantwal received the highest rainfall (77.5 mm) followed by Mangaluru (70.6 mm). Belthangady recorded 64.4 mm. Puttur and Sullia received 36.6 mm and 12.1 mm respectively.
