A two-decade wait for ‘road’ yields nothing for Kuriya

Puttur, Nov 21: It is just 10 km from Puttur town in Dakshina Kannada district. But to reach here you may need to undergo ‘circus’ or a ‘dirt track race,’ training.

The people of Kuriya and nearby villages are not asking for a metro service or an airport but just a motorable road.

The road connects Idabettu, Ammunje, Karija, Kattatabail, Otetimaru and provides connectivity to over 100 houses, three colonies, a school, and also religious places of Poyye, Kuriya Elnadaguttu.

Despite so many people residing in the area, they are not fortunate enough to have a good road when their district headquarters Mangaluru is all set to be a ‘Smart City.’

People have approached every possible politician and officer with the request but in the last 20 years, nothing has come out of it.

In two decades the state as well as Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has seen various combinations of political parties coming to power. But hardly any concrete step was taken to develop this road.

A brief history:
Villagers used to maintain the road till 1990. When Vinay Kumar Sorake contested the election for the second time from Puttur, villagers approached him with a demand to develop the road. Sorake took the initiative to widen the 3 km road, according to a villager.

But this happiness did not last long as nothing went beyond that.
After repeated demand to give a facelift only 850 Mtrs road was asphalted! Twice the MLA fund was released and only 100 mtr was concretized. Except for this, the road has not seen any development.

“People approached the local MLA Sanjeev Matandoor. He said that Rs 77 lakh has been released and asphalt work would start after the monsoon. He also said that 100 mtr road would be concretized at Rs 5 lakh. But till date nothing has happened,” the villager lamented.

People are angry as the road was dug about two months ago for repair work but the work has been abandoned now.
