Karwar, Nov 19: Ajit Pawar’s statement claiming Karwar, Nippani, and Belagavi as part of Maharashtra has annoyed the people of Uttara Kannada district.

Shivaram Hebbar

Uttara Kannada district in-charge Minister Shivaram Hebbar was one of the first to react strongly.

“We are capable of protecting our district and state. Stop giving such irrelevant statements for your political gain,” Hebbar replied in a tweet.

He also warned to give a proper answer if anybody pokes their nose in issues related to Karnataka.

Activist and Janashakthi Vedike president Madhav Nayak have asked Pawar to concentrate on solving the COVID and other burning issues in the state and also learn from Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on tolerance.

Madhav Nayak

“Pawar should read history before issuing such a statement that may lead to border unrest. On April 20, 1837, the then British government had issued order declaring Kannada as the official language of Belagavi,” Madhav Nayak said.
“Karwar is in no way connected to Maharashtra. We do not share a border also. How can they claim Karwar to be theirs?” Nayak questioned.

“Pawar should concentrate on the burning issues in his state. All are fighting COVID now, and he should look into it. Karnataka CM has set up the Maratha Development Authority. Let him take a cue from Yediyurappa and set up Kannada Development Authority there,” he demanded.

“There is a limit for everything, and we cannot tolerate such statement that may lead to unnecessary unrest. There is nobody in Karwar who wants to join Maharashtra,” he added.
