Udupi, Nov 02: In a major operation, officials lead by Udupi Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh raided a rice mill and seized over 600 quintals of rice meant for Public Distribution.

Based on accurate information, DC Jagadeesh and his team stormed a rice mill at Shiriyaara village in Brahmavara Taluk and found four trucks filled with rice.

Officials told The Canara Post that these rice were the ones being supplied under Public Distribution System (PDS)- both APL and BPL cardholders. It is suspected that the rice was collected from the beneficiaries or PDS shops. They were then polished and filled in bags at the mill. The fine rice was being loaded into the trucks to be transported outside the district.

Though during the raid officials did not find the owner or others related to the mill, the police and food department officials have taken into custody the three truck drivers and cleaners.

The police and food department officials will look into the role of the mill owners too.

“The PDS rice should reach the beneficiaries. If anybody gets any information about the PDS rice being sold outside or any such misuse, they should inform the district administration,” Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh said.
