K S Hegde Charitable Hospital gets first convalescent plasma therapy unit for COVID-19 in Coastal Karnataka
Mangaluru, Aug 22: Nitte (Deemed to be university) Justice K. S. Hegde Charitable Hospital (Blood Bank) has got the first convalescent plasma therapy unit for COVID-19 in Coastal Karnataka.
Justice KS Hedge charitable hospital, 1000 bedded hospital is serving people from last 23 years. The hospital already has dedicated beds for COVID-19 treatment including sophisticated ICU. The hospital has well equipped Blood Bank with component and Single donor platelet facility. The DCGI after going through the facility of the Blood Bank has issued licence for plasmapheresis. The Blood Bank has Apheresis equipment, testing facilities and trained personnel to carry out the plasmapheresis procedure.
With this, the hospital has all facilities to treat COVID-19 patients including Convalescent Covid 19 plasma therapy. On first day itself, we harvested convalescent plasma from three donors and transfused to COVID patients.
NITTE University Blood Bank is the only Blood Bank which has got the due licence, first of its kind in Coastal Karnataka to carry out plasmapheresis (Convalescent Covid 19 plasma), a press statement by Medical Superintendent of the Hospital stated.

- If you have recovered from COVID-19, and fulfill following criteria –
- Age above 18 years;
- All men and nulliparous women(never been pregnant) can donate
- Weight above 55kgs
Can donate after 28 days of discharge.
WHAT IS CONVALESCENT COVID 19 PLASMA THERAPY??
Convalescent Covid 19 plasma therapy is a novel treatment to fight corona virus. Plasma therapy uses antibodies from the blood of a recovered Covid 19 person to treat patients who are critically infected by the virus.
