Shivamogga, Jan 24, 2026: In a significant achievement, the Sahyadri Narayana Multispeciality Hospital which known for its comprehensive care for various ailments, has reached a milestone in advanced urological care by successfully completing over 1,000 Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) surgeries.

The TURP surgery is used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate. All the procedures were performed by the hospital’s urology team led by Consultant Urologists Dr. Prabhuling Konnur and Dr. Avinash.

Both doctors have achieved good success rate in these surgeries, which were all minimally invasive procedures. The patients too are doing well. This achievement highlights the hospital’s growing role as a referral centre for prostate care in Shivamogga and surrounding districts.

The hospital had started performing TURP surgeries using the conventional electrocautery technique a few years back. Though the surgeries were successful and had achieved good outcomes, the hospital recently upgraded to an advanced 100-watt Holmium Laser technology.

Consultant Urologist Dr Prabhuling Konnur said, “Our department has achieved this surgical milestone based on years of patient trust and teamwork. Crossing the 1,000-procedure mark is not just about numbers; it reflects the confidence that our patients have placed in us. While electrocautery technique served us well, the introduction of Holmium laser technology has transformed how we treat benign prostate enlargement, offering far greater precision and safety.”

The Holmium Laser TURP, also known as laser prostatectomy, uses high-energy laser beams to remove obstructing tissue with acute precision while simultaneously sealing blood vessels.

The advanced technique offers several benefits. Minimal blood loss makes it safer for elderly patients who are on blood thinning medications. It also offers faster recovery with reduced pain, shorter catheterisation and hospital stay. Greater degree of precision allows for effective treatment in patients who have larger prostate glands.

Consultant Urologist Dr. Avinash said the benefits of this new machine are already evident in patient outcomes. “With precision laser technology, recovery times are significantly shorter and complications are minimal. Patients are able to return to their normal routine much sooner, and the results we have seen so far have been extremely encouraging,” he noted.

Both doctors stressed that men experiencing symptoms such as difficulty in urination, weak urinary stream, frequent night-time urination, or incomplete bladder emptying should seek medical attention early. Early diagnosis paves the way for more effective treatment, including better surgical outcomes.

“With the availability of minimally invasive laser prostate surgery at Sahyadri Narayana Hospital in Shivamogga, patients from the Malnad region and neighbouring districts no longer need to travel to metropolitan cities for advanced urological treatment,” said Facility Director Mr Varghese P John.
