Consumer Awareness Key to Avoiding Fraud: ADC Mamatha Devi GS
Udupi, December 24, 2024: Numerous rights and laws exist to protect consumers. It is only by understanding these rights that individuals can avoid falling victim to fraud and deception while purchasing goods and services, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Mamatha Devi G.S.
She was addressing the gathering during the inauguration of the National Consumer Day program at the SMSP Sanskrit Study Center in Udupi. The event was organized jointly by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Food and Civil Supplies Department, Legal Metrology Department, District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum, Consumer Forum (R), District Consumer Information Center, District Legal Services Authority, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, Udupi district.
Speaking on the occasion, Mamatha Devi emphasized that under the Consumer Protection Act, consumers should thoroughly check the quality, safety, manufacturing, and expiry dates of products before purchasing them. She also stressed the importance of exercising caution while availing services through e-commerce and online platforms, ensuring transactions are made with complete information.
Senior Civil Judge and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, P.R. Yogesh, highlighted the evolution of consumer protection laws, stating that the Consumer Protection Act was first introduced in 1986. With the rise of online shopping and new services, fresh challenges have emerged, leading to the introduction of an updated Act in 2019. He explained that consumers facing grievances can file complaints online or with the Consumer Forum from the comfort of their homes, ensuring quick resolutions with minimal expenses.
Former District Consumer Information Center Coordinator A.P. Kodancha, in his lecture, remarked that market dynamics have changed significantly, necessitating continuous awareness among consumers. He stressed the importance of knowing consumer laws to utilize them effectively, empowering individuals to assert their rights.
The program was presided over by Satyanarayana P. Rao, Principal of the SMSP Sanskrit Study Center.
Also present were Tenkapete Ward Councillor Manasa C. Pai, President of the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum Sunil T. Masaraddi, Forum member Sujata B., Consumer Forum Coordinator U.G. Kamath, Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology Department Gajendra V. Edke, faculty members of the SMSP Sanskrit Study Center, staff, students from various colleges, and personnel from the Food and Civil Supplies Department.
The event began with a welcome by Ravindra, Deputy Director of the Food and Civil Supplies Department. Harikrishna Shivattaya from the Consumer Forum compered the event, while the vote of thanks was delivered by the organizers.
