Kasturba Hospital Observes World Diabetes Day with Zumba Session at Malpe Beach
Manipal, Nov 15, 2024: Highlighting the urgent need for diabetes awareness and prevention, Kasturba Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology, organized a Zumba session at Malpe Beach on Friday to mark World Diabetes Day. The event underscored the importance of physical activity in managing and preventing diabetes, with enthusiastic participation from the community.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sahana Shetty, Head of the Department of Endocrinology, revealed alarming statistics, noting that diabetes affects 11% of India’s population and poses significant health risks, including heart disease, kidney failure, and vision loss. “Diabetes also impacts mental health and quality of life. This year’s theme, ‘Diabetes and Wellbeing,’ stresses the importance of holistic care that addresses both physical and mental health,” she stated.
Dr. Shetty emphasized the role of regular physical activities such as Zumba, yoga, and walking in combating diabetes and improving overall well-being. “Prevention is achievable through a healthy lifestyle, incorporating nutritious eating habits and consistent exercise,” she added.
Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), and Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, commended the initiative. They stressed the importance of community engagement in tackling diabetes. “This Zumba session is a meaningful step towards fostering a healthier, diabetes-free future by encouraging lifestyle changes,” they remarked.
