Udupi, Sept 02, 2024: In celebration of International Democracy Day, a massive human chain involving over one lakh participants will be formed on September 15 to promote the values of democracy among the general public, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidya Kumari announced on Saturday.

Presiding over a meeting at the Dr. V.S. Acharya Hall, Rajathadri, Manipal, the Deputy Commissioner said that the government plans to celebrate International Democracy Day in a unique manner by organizing a large-scale human chain stretching from Bidar to Chamarajanagar.

“As the world’s largest democracy, it is essential to raise awareness of democratic values, especially among the youth. This initiative aims to spread these values along the route of the human chain,” she stated.

In Udupi district, the human chain will span from Shirur village in Byndoor Taluk to Hejamadi village in Kaup Taluk, covering 26 gram panchayats across a 100 km stretch. Over one lakh people, including youth, the general public, various organizations, elected representatives, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, are expected to participate, Dr. Vidya Kumari added.

Each 100-meter segment of the human chain will have a designated supervisor, and tahsildars at the taluk level will be responsible for overseeing the event. Following the human chain formation, the Preamble to the Constitution will be recited. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of providing participants with drinking water, cool beverages, and sweets during the event.

An online registration system will be set up for participants, and certificates with photographs will be distributed to those who take part. Dr. Vidya Kumari urged the public, organizations, and institutions to participate in large numbers.

To ensure safety, the health department will deploy ambulances with medical teams at key locations, and the police department will provide security arrangements. School and college students are encouraged to actively participate, with instructions given to ensure their involvement.

At the district level, a stage event will be organized with invited dignitaries. The event will also feature music bands, tableaux, cultural performances, and participation from students and the public, the DC said, calling for necessary preparations.

She also stressed the importance of widespread promotion of Democracy Day to encourage maximum participation, suggesting the use of social media for outreach. Committees at the taluk level will be formed to ensure the event’s success, with discussions on necessary arrangements, she added.

The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Mamatha Devi G.S., Siddhalingappa, Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department Anita Madloor, Udupi Municipal Commissioner Rayappa, district-level officials, representatives of various organizations, and other stakeholders.
