Sahyadri Narayana Hospital in Shivamogga Hits Major Milestone with More than 1,000 Joint Replacements

Shivamogga, April 23, 2025: Sahyadri Narayana Hospital, known across the Malnad region and central Karnataka for its high-quality tertiary care, has achieved a remarkable milestone: performing more than 1,000 knee and hip replacement surgeries. This achievement marks the hospital as the first in the region to reach such a big number.
Since opening its orthopedic department in 2012, the hospital has steadily built its expertise over the past 13 years to reach this landmark figure.
Speaking to the press here on Wednesday, Dr. Chetan Mathad, an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, shared details about the team’s accomplishments. “Our orthopedic team has successfully performed a wide range of knee and hip surgeries,” he explained. “This includes over 200 knee arthroscopies – a minimally invasive technique using small incisions and a camera to fix issues like torn cartilage or ligaments.”
Dr. Chetan noted that the team also handles complex hip surgeries. “Over the past year,” he added, “we’ve expanded our services to include total knee replacements, and we’re proud to say we’ve already completed around 50 of these procedures successfully.”
Highlighting the breadth of patients they serve, Dr. Chetan mentioned, “Our oldest patient to successfully undergo a total knee replacement was 90 years old, and he is now living a near-normal life. We’ve also helped several patients well into their 80s regain mobility through similar surgeries.”
Dr. Chetan explained that knee surgeries usually become an option when other treatments haven’t worked. “When things like medication, physical therapy, or injections no longer manage the pain or improve function, surgery might be the next step,” he said.
He elaborated on who could benefit by surgeries, elderly individuals whose mobility is severely limited by arthritis. People with severe injuries, such as torn ligaments or fractures involving the knee joint.
Those experiencing chronic pain and mobility problems despite months of non-surgical treatment. Anyone finding it difficult to perform daily activities like walking or climbing stairs.
“Knee surgery is a highly safe procedure known for delivering excellent results,” Dr. Chetan emphasized.
He further added, “Whether it’s due to severe injuries, arthritis, or persistent pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments, knee surgery can restore mobility, significantly reduce pain, and improve overall quality of life. Thanks to modern techniques, the procedure is generally safe and very effective. Most patients see significant improvement and can return to their daily routines within weeks or months after surgery.”
Dr. Chetan also observed a trend in hip replacements. “We’ve noticed an increase in patients needing hip replacements post-COVID,” he stated. “A significant number of these cases are due to avascular necrosis – a condition where bone tissue dies because of reduced blood flow.”
He suggested a possible link, “The use of steroids during COVID-19 treatment might be a contributing factor, potentially leading to joint damage. This increases the need for surgery to restore mobility and alleviate pain.”
Dr. Chetan urged for timely intervention, especially for older adults. “It’s important to consider knee surgery sooner rather than later to prevent further joint damage and maintain an active lifestyle. Delaying treatment can sometimes lead to more complications and affect quality of life. Senior citizens shouldn’t hesitate – modern surgical techniques are safe, and getting treatment promptly can help them stay active and independent,” he said.
Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Chakravarthi Sandur, Facility Director Mr Verghese P John, Marketing General Manager Mr Raja Singh SV, Marketing Manager Mr Shylesh SN and others were present.
