Manipal, July 24, 2024: Kasturba Hospital in Manipal has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing an innovative endoscopic procedure called Endoultrasound-guided Gastrojejunostomy (EUS-GJ). This groundbreaking procedure was conducted on an elderly patient suffering from malignancy-induced gastric outlet obstruction, which had severely affected his ability to consume food.

The medical team, led by Dr. Shiran Shetty, Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, opted to perform this state-of-the-art procedure under minimal sedation. Dr. Shetty explained, “This technique, developed by Japanese endoscopists, creates a connection between the stomach and the small intestine, bypassing the obstruction and allowing the patient to eat normally.”

The patient responded positively to the treatment, began eating orally, and was discharged within 48 hours. Dr. Ganesh Bhat, Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, emphasized the advantages of this minimally invasive procedure: “Because it requires only minimal sedation, patients can expect a very short hospital stay, typically being discharged within two days. This procedure was performed in our new, state-of-the-art endoscopy suite.”

Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, expressed his pride in the hospital’s advanced capabilities. “Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, is the first medical college and hospital in this region of Karnataka to offer this advanced procedure with a team of highly trained doctors. I congratulate Dr. Shiran Shetty and his team on their successful execution of this procedure.”

This successful procedure underscores Kasturba Hospital’s commitment to providing superior patient care through advanced medical treatments and highly skilled specialists, setting a new benchmark for medical excellence in the region.
