Brahma Rathotsava Marks Makara Sankramana Celebrations at Udupi Sri Krishna Matha
Udupi, January 14, 2024: The auspicious occasion of Makara Sankramana, celebrated as Brahma Rathotsava, unfolded at Udupi Sri Krishna Matha today, drawing devotees in large numbers.
Makara Sankramana holds significance as it marks the transition of the Sun from Dhanu Rashi to Makara Rashi. In Udupi, it carries additional importance as it commemorates the day when Sri Madhwacharya installed Sri Krishna at Udupi. The ‘Sapthotsava’ (Seven-day Utsava) is an annual tradition at Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, leading up to the grand Brahma Rathotsava.
The celebration spans seven days, featuring processions with two chariots on the first five days. The pinnacle of the festivities occurs on the sixth day, Makara Sankranthi, with the commencement of the first Brahma Rathotsava of the year. Sri Krishna graces the Brahma Ratha, while Sri Anantheshwara, Sri Chandramauleeshwara, and Sri Mukhyaprana occupy the other chariots. The day following Makara Sankramana witnesses the ‘Choornotsava’ during the day, adding to the vibrancy of the celebration.
Devotees gathered in significant numbers to offer their prayers, creating a spiritual ambiance.
The presence of revered dignitaries including Paryaya Peetadhipathi Sri Vidya Sagara Tirtha Sripadaru (Krishnapura Matha), Sri Vidyadheesha Tirtha Sripadaru (Palimaru Matha senior pontiff), Sri Vidyavallabha Tirtha Sripadaru (Kaniyoor Matha), Sri Vishwavallabha Tirtha (Sode Matha), Sri Vidyarajeshwara Tirtha (Palimaru Matha junior pontiff), and Sri Vedavardhana Tirtha Sripadaru (Shirooru Matha) added spiritual grace to the occasion.
