Karwar, Sept 22, 2021: It is common to spot beggars and homeless people in bus stands and grounds. Recently Janashakthi Vedike, Red Cross, and Mother Teresa Sangha had toiled to provide them a shelter by sending them to Rehabilitation Center.

While it is the government’s responsibility to shift the destitute to the rehabilitation centers, activist and Janashakthi Vedike president Madhav Nayak noted that all districts do not have them.

“There are many homeless and beggars in every town. As per the guidelines they have to be shifted to the rehabilitation centers. The government collects Beggars Cess from every citizen. This money should be properly used. Every district should have a rehabilitation center,” Madhav Nayak told The Canara Post.

“A huge amount is collected as Beggars Cess in the state every year. The government should have a rehabilitation center in every district. In the entire state, only about 15 districts have these centers. Uttara Kannada district does not have one. We have to depend on Belagavi,” he said.

“A center should be opened at Karwar or Ankola at the earliest,” he added.

Nayak has submitted a memorandum to the district administration. He will shortly meet the concerned minister with the demand.
