Udupi: A curious link between DVS and Bommai
Udupi, July 27, 2021: It is purely a coincidence. But the ‘July revolution’ in BJP has some connection with Udupi.
While this is the second time Yediyurappa is handing his post to another leader in the party, the coincidence is that the ‘successor’ is in some way connected to Udupi.
Following court cases and corruption charges, the discussion on change in leadership began in July 2011. BSY had to step down from the post of Chief Minister on August 4, 2011, after his 3- year 66-day rule.
While many names were making rounds, Yediyurappa had decided to elevate Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP DV Sadananda Gowda as the Cheif Minister. Gowda quit the seat and became Chief Minister on August 5, 2011. He was elected MLC and continued in the post of CM till July 11, 2012.
Now ten years down the lane in another ‘July revolution,’ BSY has again quit his chair making way for his close aide Basavaraj Bommai. Even now many names were making round and Bommai’s elevation came as a surprise.
While Bommai hails from Hubballi, interestingly, he too has some relation with Udupi.
Bommai was the Home Minister in BSY’s government. He also held the post of district in-charge minister of Udupi.
For the Udupi unit of BJP, there is something to rejoice in as the leader in power in the district is elevated to the post of Chief Minister in a time of crisis.
