Mangaluru, June 07, 2021: The notion that Covid-19 is concentrated and spreads more at Cities has now been negated. The latest government report (issued on June 4) shows high positivity rates in rural areas than the district headquarters.

Sullia, one of the rural taluks in Dakshina Kannada has the highest 50.43 percent positivity. It is similar in Kumta which has 37.75 percent.

Even Taluks like Sirsi, Honnavar and Puttur have 25-30 percent positivity.

Interestingly Karwar- Uttara Kannada’s district’s headquarters has an 8.24 percent positivity rate. It is 18.67 percent in Mangaluru and 20 percent in Udupi.

Though taluks like Haliyal, Ankola, Karwar, Karkala had high number of cases earlier, they are now witnessing a drop in Covid cases.

In the Coastal region, only Mundgod in Uttara Kannada has less than a 5 percent positivity rate.

Officials agree that the number of cases has now shifted to rural areas due to various reasons. The testing has been increased in the villages and strict measures are taken to ensure the cases do not spread. In many places, the Panchayats have taken proactive measures including keeping a strict vigil on the movement of vehicles into the village and also within the villages.

According to sources the strict measures may continue in rural areas.
