International Childhood Cancer Day observed at Kasturba Hospital
It is observed worldwide on Feb 15 every year
Manipal, Feb 15, 2021: Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology observed International Childhood Cancer Day at Kasturba Hospital Manipal today.
The main purpose of the program is to create awareness among the general public about childhood cancers.
It is observed worldwide on Feb 15 every year. This year’s theme is “Better Survival” is achievable #throughourhands.
KMC Dean Dr. Sharath K Rao, Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Shetty jointly inaugurated the program with children with cancer.
Nursing Services Head Dr. Shubha Sooria, Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Center coordinator Dr. Naveen S. Salins, and Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Head Dr. Vasudeva Bhatt K were present.
“Nearly three lakh children are diagnosed with cancer every year around the world. In India, the number is 40 to 45 thousand. If diagnosed and treated at the right time, child cancer can be cured completely. In western countries cure rate is 80 to 90%. In India, it is within 50% percent, due to delays in the diagnosis, Myths in the people’s minds, and a limited number of pediatrics cancer care centers, ” Dr. Sharat Rao said.
“The World Health Organization aims to increase cure rate to 60 – 65% percent in low middle-income countries. Manipal Comprehensive Cancer care center has a separate division for children with cancer with state of the art services,” Dr. Avinash Shetty said.
An entertainment program was organized for children who taking treatment and who were completely cured.
