11 Kerala students arrested for ragging
Mangaluru Feb 11, 2011: Showing zero tolerance towards ragging, Mangaluru City Police booked cases against 11 students of Kanachur college of Physiotherapy and Nursing today.
Giving details about the case, Mangaluru City Police chief N Shashi Kumar said that five students of Kanachur College of Physiotherapy and Nursing were ragged by a group of seniors.
The seniors allegedly asked the freshers to have hair cut and also asked some to count the sticks in the match box and also measure the room with match sticks.
When the students expressed opposition, the seniors allegedly pushed them and warned serious consequences if they failed to follow the ‘instructions.’
The students had brought this to the notice of the college administration. The college authorities inturn complained to the Ullal Police Station against 18 students.
The police who probed the case found that 11 were involved in this.
The police have taken 11 students – Mohammed Shamon, Akshay KS, Robin Biju, Abdul Ananas, Jefin Roichan, Alwin Joy, Jeron Ciril, Mahammad Suraj, Asin Babu, Jubin Meharup, Abdul Basit- into custody and initiated legal action. All these students are from Kerala.
Case has been booked under IPC 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (Criminal Intimidating) and 34 (common intention) along with Section 116 (Ragging) of Karnataka Education Act.
The Commissioner asked the students not to involve in such cases as it would bring bad name to Mangaluru which is known for educational institutions.
“I request the students not to remains silent but to bring such cases to the notice of administration or the police,” he added.
