Kasturba Hospital conducts two rare surgeries
Surgeries conducted by Dr. Muralidhar V Pai, Dr. Rekha Upadhya, and the team
Manipal, Jan 20, 2021: Doctors of Kasturba Hospital Manipal conducted two rare surgeries of tumors recently.
While one surgery was of the uterus the other was of the ovary. The surgeries was conducted by Dr. Muralidhar V Pai, Dr. Rekha Upadhya, and the team.
Uterine Tumor: For the last four months, a 42-year-old woman suffered pain and sudden distension of the abdomen. She had a huge uterine tumor corresponding to the size of 8 months pregnant uterus.
Due to the speed of growth Sarcoma (a rare type of uterine cancer) was suspected. MRI suggested a large tumor with degenerative changes.
After counseling and consent, the uterus was removed intact with the tumor to avoid spillage of degenerative and possible cancerous material by Dr. Rekha Upadhya. The tumor was weighing 3.1 kg.
Ovarian Tumor: A 23-year-old unmarried woman had a large ovarian tumor. The doctors suspected a rare Germ Cell Tumor. MRI suggested solid ovarian tumor restricted to one ovary with no spread to other places. Hence one-sided ovary with the tumor was removed by Dr. Rekha Upadhya saving the uterus and other ovary. Extra care was taken as the woman was young and unmarried. Doctors feel she will be able to get married and bear children.
Dr. Rekha Upadhya is trained in the management of Gynecological Cancers at TATA Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, and is available for the management of gynecological cancers in the Dept of OBG. She is also a member of the team that takes care of cancers in women at Comprehensive Cancer Care Center of KH Manipal.
Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal congratulated the team for introducing and performing this complex surgery at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and said it gives more hope to the Udupi and neighboring districts.
