Complete Hejamadi Kodi harbor in two years: CM directs officials
Udupi, Jan 19, 2021: One of the longstanding demands of the fishermen seems to be nearing realization with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today laying the foundation stone for the Hejamadi Kodi fishing harbor project.
Addressing the gathering CM B S Yediyurappa assured all necessary help to the fishing community and asked the officials to complete the work within two years.
Fishing is one of the major activities in Coastal Karnataka. While Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada and Malpe in Udupi district are the two prominent fishing harbors, situated at a distance of 50 km, there is none in between.
The fishermen wanted a harbor at Hejamadi Kodi in Udupi district as it would be equidistant between Malpe and Mangaluru. While it would help the local fishermen to market their fish, it would also ease the pressure on Malpe harbor which already has 1,800 mechanized boats operating.
The Hejamadi Kodi harbor will also help the local industries as the ice units and cold storage would be setup.
Considering the demand the state government during the 2013-14 budget announced setting up of the harbor at Hejamadi Kodi. The state sent a proposal of ₹ 138.60 crores to the central government.
The Agriculture Minister on August 13, 2013, gave its nod for the project. The central and state government would spend 50 percent each for the project.
The central government also released the first installment of ₹13.86 crores for this. For the land acquisition, the central government provided ₹13.24 crore.
What will the project have:
A 692 mtr breakwater to the north, 781 mtr breakwater to the south, 208 and 160 mtrs long landing and birthing jetty, auction hall, parking, drinking water facility, power supply, Underground drainage, net knitting shed, a restroom for fishermen, public toilet, radio communication building, and office building. In the coming days, diesel units will also be setup.
