Karwar, Nov 27, 2020: The Karnataka State Biodiversity Board proposes to include the salt produced at the Sanikatta area in the biodiversity heritage list.

Sanikatta, on the way to Gokarna, in Kumta Taluk is famous for salt production.

Board chairman Anat Hegde Ashisar was speaking to reporters during his visit to Karwar on Friday.

“Salt was being produced here even before Independence. Today too the salt continues to have its own specialty. It can be considered as an asset of the district. Though it is not directly agriculture, it provides employment to the local villagers. Considering all these, it should be included in the heritage list,” he said.
Ashisar stressed the need to preserve the endangered verities.

“The Kari Ishad mango grown in the district (Ankola) will be given importance. Steps will be taken to grow 1,000 trees with the help of the forest department,” he said.

Board member Dr. Prakash Mesta, Additional DC Krishnamurthy H K, and others were present.
