 Heavy rain damages 6.68 hectare Mattu Gulla

Udupi, Oct 19: Heavy rain and flood this year have damaged 6.68 hectares of Mattu Gulla crop in the Udupi district.

Mattu Gulla, the brinjal verity with Geological Indication (GI) tag is grown in Mattu, Uliyaragoli, and the nearby village of Udupi district.

While the normal rain is 4,375 mm, this year the district has received 15 percent excess rainfall. Udupi received 5,051 mm rainfall this year.

Giving details about the loss during the monthly KDP meeting, Udupi district Horticulture Deputy Director Bhuvaneshwari said that 52 Mattu Gulla growers have suffered a loss due to rain. Crop in 6.68 hectares has been damaged. The department has written to the government recommending a compensation of ₹ 20,000 per acre to the Mattu Gulla growers.

Meanwhile, the Joint Director of Agriculture Kempegowda told the meeting that the 273-hectare paddy crop was damaged during this season.
