Udupi turns a roadside menace to fodder

Udupi, Oct 15: While grass cutting is an annual exercise for Udupi City Municipality, the recent initiative was blended with social service.
Grass that grows beside the road during monsoon disrupts clear vision and result in accidents many a times. As the monsoon recedes, the local bodies start the weed cutting exercise. In recent days it is done through the weed cutter, and grass pieces are wasted.
But Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat and with the help of the Udupi Municipality decided to do something new. Instead of duping the grass in someplace, Bhat decided to hand it over to the Nilavara Gow Shala run by Udupi Pejawar Matha.
Gow shala comprises cattle that are abandoned, neglected, and rescued cattle.
“Sri Vishwaprasanna Teertha Swamiji of Pejawar Matha runs a Gow Shala which is model. There is a need for grass and fodder for the cattle there. While planning to clear the grass on the roadside, MLA Raghupathi Bhat came up with the idea of supplying this grass to the cattle at Nilavara Gow Shala. The Municipal Commissioner too agreed. We appreciate the initiative taken by the MLA and Municipality,” social activist Vasudeva Bhat Perampalli told The Canara Post.
“Nine loads (5 big trucks, 3 mini tippers, and a small tempo) of grass were sent to the Gow Shala,” he added.
This move by the MLA has received great appreciation on social media.
