Cyclone storm over southeast Bay of Bengal

Morning’s depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood intensified into a deep depression at 1430 hours IST, remained practically stationary during past 06 hours and rapidly intensified into a Cyclonic Storm ‘AMPHAN’ (pronounced as UMPUN) and lay centred over the same region at 1730 hours IST of today, the 16th May, 2020 near latitude 10.9°N and longitude 86.3°E, about 1040 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 1200 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1300 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is very likely to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours and into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm by 18th morning. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards initially till 17th May and then re-curve north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal towards West Bengal and adjoining North Odisha coasts during 18th to 20th May 2020.

Day 1(16-05-2020): Squally weather conditions with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph likely to prevail over southeast & adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Lakshadweep & adjoining southeast Arabian Sea. Sea condition will be rough to very rough over south & adjoining central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea till afternoon. It will be high over southwest & adjoining central Bay of Bengal from evening. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

Day 2(17-05-2020): Gale wind speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph likely to prevail over east central and adjoining
westcentral Bay of Bengal and Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail over Andaman Sea. Sea
condition will be very high over southwest & adjoining central Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.
