Manipal, October 4, 2024: Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, launched a new textbook, Essentials of Ophthalmology: As per the Indian Competency-Based Medical Curriculum, today at the Interact Lecture Hall GB on the KMC campus. Published by Wolters Kluwer, the book serves as a key resource for undergraduate medical students, offering insights into both theory and practice.

The textbook is authored by Dr. Sulatha V. Bhandary, Dr. Vijaya Pai H, Dr. Lavanya G. Rao, and Dr. Uma Kulkarni—faculty members from KMC and Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru.

Dr. Sharath Kumar Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor of Health Sciences at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), was the chief guest at the event, along with Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean of KMC, and Dr. Shailaja, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at KMC.

Dr. Padmaraj Hegde launched the e-book version of the textbook and remarked that it fills a critical gap in undergraduate medical education, offering practical and theoretical insights for ophthalmology students.

“This book is a testament to the hard work and expertise of our faculty. It fills a crucial gap in undergraduate medical education, providing practical and theoretical insights that will guide students through their journey in ophthalmology” he said.

Dr. Sharath Kumar Rao followed by launching the hardcopy and noted that the book is expected to benefit not only KMC but also the broader academic community.

“The release of this textbook represents a significant milestone, not only for KMC but for the entire academic community in ophthalmology. The clarity, comprehensive coverage, and practical approach of this book will ensure that our students are well-prepared for both their academic and clinical roles,” he said.

Dr. Sulatha V. Bhandary provided an overview of the textbook and its practical applications, while the authors shared their experiences and the collaborative process behind the book. The event concluded with a ceremonial handover of the textbook to the KMC library and the Department of Ophthalmology.
