MAHE celebrates International Women’s Day with week-long events
Manipal, March 09, 2023: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) celebrated International Women’s Day with great enthusiasm through week-long events aimed at empowering women and promoting gender equality.
The theme for this year’s celebration was “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”.
MAHE organized a video-making and article-writing competition for women of different age groups. The event was attended by notable guests including Vasanti R. Pai, Trustee, MAHE Trust; Rekha Sharma, Chairperson National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi; Dr. Vanita N. Torvi, World Ambassador – Child Rights, International Human Rights Observatory (IHRO); Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, MAHE; Lt. General ( Dr) M.D. Venkatesh, Vice-Chancellor, MAHE, Indira Ballal, Entrepreneur & Philontherapist and Kusuma Venkatesh, Educationist.
“It is important to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women who have made a significant contribution to society. Women have proved time and again that they can break barriers and excel in all fields. However, there is still a long way to go when it comes to achieving gender equality. I hope this event serves as a platform to inspire more women to come forward and make their mark in the world,” Chief Guest Rekha Sharma said.
Vasanti R. Pai highlighted that empowering women is key to building a strong and prosperous society. She urged participants to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
Dr. Vanita N. Torvi spoke about the progress made in the fight for gender equality over the years and the need to work together to ensure every girl has access to education and equal opportunities.
Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M.D. Venkatesh, Vice-Chancellor, MAHE, emphasized the critical role women play in society and the importance of ensuring that they have equal opportunities to reach their full potential.
The event concluded with a Symposium on “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for gender equality,” coordinated by Prof. Balakrishna Rao, Director IT & Digital MAHE, with esteemed panellists from various industries. There was also an extravaganza cultural program performed by staff and students of MAHE.
On March 6th, MAHE organized The FIT Woman Cyclothon, flagged off by Indira Ballal and Kusuma Venkatesh in the presence of Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, Lt. General (Dr.) M.D. Venkatesh, Vice-Chancellor, MAHE. Approximately 150 women participated in the event, where they cycled a course from Edu Building to RTO circle, Manipal, and back.
MAHE also organized a video-making competition and article-writing competition based on the theme “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.”
The competition had three age groups: Group A for participants aged between 12-15 years, Group B for those aged between 16-19 years, and Group C for participants aged 20 years and above. The shortlisted submissions were displayed on the day of the event at Dr. TMA Pai Hall, and the winners were felicitated.
Overall, the International Women’s Day celebration at MAHE was a resounding success, with notable guests highlighting the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of women while recognizing that there is still a long way to go in achieving gender equality.
