CM hands over compensation to Suvarna Thribhuja boat accident victims’ family
Udupi, Nov 21: After almost two years since the fishing boat Suvarna Thribhuja went missing, the family members received compensation of ₹10 lakh from the state government.
At a function held on the occasion of World Fisheries Day in Bengaluru, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa handed over a cheque of ₹10 lakh each to the family members of those fishermen aboard Suvarna Thribhuja.
With seven fishermen onboard including its owner, Suvarna Thribhuja had left Malpe fishing harbor on December 13, 2018, and went missing off Goa coast two days later.
A massive search operation was conducted, but officials failed to find the whereabouts of the boat. There was suspicion that the boat must have sunk after being hit by an Indian Navy ship that was on the same path.
Indian Navy officials accompanied by a team including fishermen and MLA Raghupathi Bhat had found the wreck of Suvarna Thribhuja off Malvan coast (Maharashtra) on May 1, 2019. It was confirmed on May 2 by Naval divers.
Though the government had declared to provide the compensation, it had not released the money.
As the seven fishermen on board the boat were the breadwinners, the family faced a financial problem. MLA Raghupathi Bhat had written to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to release a compensation of ₹10 lakh to each family.
